Diving is a relatively expensive hobby but in recent years it has become more accessible. The price of the course and equipment combined with a holiday and flights, makes diving a rather expensive pastime. 

Achieving the first level, becoming a Diver Level 1 or Open Water Scuba Diver costs between $150 and $600 depending on where you want to complete your course. In addition, some dive centers charge you gear rental on top of the course price. 

When you become a diver, you will want to invest in your own gear. A complete set costs anything between $1,000 and $2,000 US dollars. During your Diver Level 1 you learn how to wash and maintain your equipment so it will last years if serviced regularly and stored correctly. 

Dive centers in tropical destinations usually schedule courses over 4-5 days to ensure the whole day is not spent diving. You can also complete the theory section online before you fly off on holiday. Most dive centers in holiday destinations understand that you don’t want to spend all the time away from the sun and sea in a classroom during your holiday. Most will offer e-learning for the theory component which can be done in the comfort of your own home, virtually, before starting the course. This means you don’t have to waste precious moments. Some hotels that are dive focused offer rooms and courses as a package at a discounted price. 

The cost of diving is higher for beginners as they have to enroll in classes and invest in necessary equipment. Experienced divers usually have lower expenses as additional training is supplementary and optional. If they already own their gear, they will only have to pay for maintenance. Remember: as a new diver you do not have to buy all the equipment immediately. Most shops offer rental options by hours, number of days or dives.
